While
the others pondered his question, Luger set out his own theories and
plan of action for the party:
“It
looks to me like ‘Uncle Jaroo’ was a doppleganger,”
began the cleric. “Growing up with Mauser, you'd think I would
have suspected as much from your descriptions. Nevertheless, if that
thing had taken up residence in Jaroo's home, perhaps we should
search it for any more clues about the cult. Maybe we'll find the
real Uncle Jaroo tied up in a closet or something. If Jaroo is not
found, I will be truly sorry for your loss, Telemachos. Not to sound
callous, but as Jaroo's only relative, you are his heir. Maybe Jaroo
left behind something that will aid us in our fight against the
cult.”
“I also
think we should pay the church of Pelor a visit and fill in the
clergy about the moathouse obelisk,” continued Luger. “I
think it should be destroyed or at least covered so no one else can
excavate it. If these cultist are planning to take the obelisk to
their temple, I have no doubt that they will continue to send more
men to the moathouse and possibly to Hommlet to collect their prize.
It’s bad enough the town has to go without bread for the coming
weeks, but I don't think we want more of these cultists on the
loose.”
“Well,
now,” mused Telemachos. “I don't know if you are calling
mine good uncle a name or saying he was that foul creature. It is a
grievous thought that that vile thing might have killed him and
assumed his identity. I can only hope for the only slightly less
disturbing possibility that my uncle is safely at home suffering from
his ailment and was simply touched by this thing as I was. Let us not
lose hope yet. My heart cannot bear it. Let's head over there right
now. I pray you have one of those detect evil spells to cast on his
apprentice. If things are as I fear, I have one more cultist to slay
. . . this one very, very slowly. We may be here for weeks so that I
may properly carry out the task!”
“What
say you, Danton and Nanoc?” asked Telemachos, looking at the
two men. “Are you game for solving this riddle once and for
all? Shall we head over to mine great uncle's home and find out about
him and his apprentice?”
“I'm
for it,” said Luger, before Nanoc or Danton could say anything.
“Maybe we can find your real uncle and he can help you with
your search for your father. With any luck, maybe he'll know what is
going on with this cult too.”
With Nanoc
preoccupied by staring at Aseneth across the table, Danton spoke
next:
“I hath
heard tales of creatures such as assumed the shape of Jaroo ... but I
must confess, I hath never associated Mauser with such things. In
sooth, was he a doppleganger, Luger? 'Twould explain many
things....'Twould also seem right to check Jaroo to see if he is, in
fact, dead and gone. Such a mission I gladly undertake for mine
friend, Telemachos, and gratis. As for the moathouse, obelisk and
further leads on this despicable cult, I prefereth cash.”
”I
hath had mine journal waterlogged and more recently been waylaid at
an inn by cultists and burned with acid,” continued Danton.
“Peril is found aplenty here in Hommlet, so much is obvious.
But where, I ask, is the reward commensurate withal? To mine eyes,
'tis lacking ... and sorely. Verily, there are problems of enormity
in this town. Luger, your god drives you to clash with the wicked men
who live here. No doubt, Nanoc's kindly heart wilt equally drive him.
If Jaroo still liveth, Telemachos wilt feel compelled, and if Jaroo
hath been slain by this cult, vengeance might call equally strong for
rejoinder.”
”But
what for Danton Verbrugge?” asked the scout bitterly, his voice
carrying across the restaurant. “Where is his meat and
bread in all of this? Hath I been once played patsy by mine erstwhile
Velunese overlords, and now be played the same by dithering,
cheapskate clergy? 'Tis an impossibility! So, onward to Jaroo's, I
say. But beyond this, I want money for mine labors, plain and
simple.”
“Well,
Fellahs,” said Nanoc finally, tearing his gaze away from
Aseneth for a moment. “I don’t mind goin’ ta check
on Tel’s uncle. Maybe that there thing jus’ took his
shape to fool Tel an’ Jaroo is still sittin’ back at his
shack. As far as this here cult, they ain’t nothin’ but
evil, and they needs to be gotten rid of. I think we gots all the
proof we needs. And that there one priest said if we had the proof,
well they’d be helpin’. I think we done a lot for this
town, and I agrees with Danton. If’n the want more from us
well they oughta hire us. Otherwise once we get done wit Jaroo I
think oughta make for the temple. Ain’t that right Asya?”
“That is very
right,” said the sorceress firmly. “We were finding much
things value in moathouse. Is probably same or better in ruined
temple. Unless someone is paying very much money, we should go where
we are wanting, doing what we are wanting. Artifacts of power we are
finding in lost places—not here in town.”
“Darn right!”
said Nanoc, pounding his fist on the table so hard that it nearly
spilled Danton’s drink in his lap. “We gotta explore the
temple and this ‘ghost town’ nearby. But let’s get
goin’ ta the grove now and see what’s what with Tel’s
uncle.”
With their
decisions made, the party members quickly exited the Inn of the
Welcome Wench, passing several carpenters and other artisans in the
hallway on the way out. From the sounds coming from upstairs, it
sounded as if the renovations required in the aftermath of the
previous night’s mayhem were already well underway.
As the group
trudged up the hill towards the grove high above, Telemachos offered
words of caution:
“When
we arrive, we must tread lightly at first if we are to prevent any
cultists, including possibly that assistant of his, from getting
away, especially if they know what has happened to him and if there is a cure for my uncle’s malady. I
want to start by reconnoitering the surrounding area as thoroughly as
possible. Once we’ve done that, if any of you
spell-casters have any kind of spell to detect evil or evil intent,
we should employ that first on my uncle’s assistant and then on
anyone else who may be present.”
“After that,”
continued the Furyondian, “I will question the chap and try to
judge his reactions. We'll inform him that the members of the
cult are all dead and that any other cultists will be slowly tortured
for what they have done. We'll inform him of the shapechanger and
watch his reaction, then demand to see my uncle, not taking no for an
answer. We'll search the grounds thoroughly as well, roughing
anyone up who gets in the way.”
At Telemachos’ direction,
when the group neared the grove, the individual members fanned out to
observe and approach it from several different directions. After the
group had effectively surrounded the cluster of trees and watched it
for a half hour, not seeing any signs of movement or activity during
that time, Telemachos signaled the others to join him in moving
inside.
Other than the rustle of the wind
through the trees and the sounds of small birds and other animals,
the grove was completely quiet. No one was about either in the small
open area at the center of the grove, nor in the little wooden house
where Jaroo resided. There was no sign of Yundi, the druid’s
apprentice, anywhere, nor of the wolf that had always accompanied the
boy.
Led by Danton (search:
10+10=20), the party rifled through all of the contents of the
small house and the surrounding area, making two discoveries in rapid
succession.
First, while poking around a rock
pile on the edge of the clearing at the center of the grove, Nanoc
found blood on several rocks. Upon closer inspection and the removal
of some of the rocks, the barbarian discovered the body of Yundi and
that of a wolf. As far as Luger could tell (healing: 10+9=19),
it appeared that both the apprentice druid and the wolf had been
slain by blades sometime during the last twenty-four hours.
Not long thereafter, Danton found
an area in the dirt floor of Jaroo’s house that appeared to
have been disturbed or excavated at some point. Finding a pair of
shovels outside amidst the druid’s gardening implements,
Telemachos and Nanoc set to digging in the floor of the house. Soon a
foul smell began to waft up from the ground, and before long the pair
of warriors had unearthed a filthy blanket covering what everyone had
already guessed was most likely a body.
Steeling himself for what he knew
he must do, Telemachos looked down at the body in the blanket when
Nanoc removed it from the hole in the floor and pulled back the
covering. Although the body was in bad shape after what must have
been weeks in the ground, Telemachos could still just barely
recognize its features as those of his great uncle.
“O, cruel fates!”
moaned the soldier, looking away as quickly as he could. Nanoc
wrapped the body in the blanket once more and then took it outside
for a more proper burial.
“Why have the gods turned so
against mine family?” asked Telemachos. “Why? What have
we done to merit such divine retribution? My father is lost, my
mother assailed by men of ill repute, while I wander the world unable
to learn or find anything that would offer the slightest glimpse of
hope! Uncle Jaroo was my last chance of aid in my quest and he is
foully murdered by cultists and creatures of nightmare. My quest has
failed!”
“I have had enough of this
place!” spat Telemachos as he walked out of the small house in
search of fresh air. “Good Danton, are you ready to leave this
pit from hell yet? Let us be off! I know not if I can stand one more
hour in this place!”
“I understand your
sentiments, my friend,” said Danton consolingly as he joined
the Furyondian outside. “I too would leave this place, but
there remain a few things we must seek to accomplish here before
departing, including speaking with the cheapskate clergy and the
local authorities. Although I can promise nothing, perhaps we may yet
learn something more of your uncle’s unjust fate or find some
other clue that would guide our actions.”
***
After re-burying Jaroo in his grove
and finding nothing else of value or interest in the area, the party
marched down the hill once again. Once back in the center of town,
the group went in search of the militia captain, Elmo. After a half
hour of inquiries, the party finally found Elmo and several of his
men on the riverbank near the burned out shell of the flourmill. Elmo
stood on the grassy bank near several bodies, while most of the men
with him were in the water, diving down repeatedly in search of
something.
“I’m afraid we found
Karlun and his family,” said the militia captain when the party
approached. Pointing down at the waterlogged bodies of a woman and
two children that lay at his feet, with ropes tied around their arms
and legs, he continued, “While searching the house and the
surrounding area, one of my men spotted something strange at the
bottom of the river this morning, and it turned out to be the whole
family. Someone bound them all, tied rocks to their legs and then
sank them in the river, probably by pushing them off a boat. Karlun
and one of his sons are still at the bottom, but we’ve now
found all five.”
“These cultists are pure
evil!” said Nanoc angrily. “Sneaking around killing old
folks and kids, trying ta kill people in the night while they’s
sleepin’. They’re rotten to the core and need ta be
eliminated—every last one!”
“We also managed to track
down the mill workers,” continued Elmo. “They say that
the man with the beard—one of the ones killed in the attack on
the inn last night, arrived nearly a month ago. Karlun presented him
and his associates to the mill workers as friends from out of town.
They took up residence in the cellar under the mill and mostly kept
to themselves, except for the woman, who began working in the mill.
Then, approximately a week ago, Karlun and his family disappeared. I
don’t know what it all means, but it would appear that Karlun
was either an associate of these men that they subsequently betrayed,
or he was simply duped and killed by them.”
“And what of the one we took
alive last night?” asked Danton. “Hath she offered any
information?”
“No,” said Elmo, “but
upon searching her, we discovered that she is not human—at
least not entirely. Whatever she is, she has small horns hidden by
her hair, cloven feet, and some sort of animal-like tail. I have
never seen anything like it, but it is clearly not natural—her
very presence somehow feels wrong.”
“I have seeing such things,”
said Aseneth, “in Rinloru. When dead taking our city, they were
having some creatures—demon—with them. Sometime demon and
person together making thing like this…woman…some part
is person and some part is demon.”
Luger nodded. “They are rare,
but not unheard of—in Greyhawk they were called ‘tieflings’—a
mix of human and demon, but all evil. This one should be judged and
then put to the sword.”
“Hath the woman or whatever
she may be offered any information on the cult or its activities?”
asked Danton.
“No,” said Elmo. “She
rants and raves constantly about how her ‘Dark Lord’ will
destroy us all, but is either unwilling, or too incoherent, to answer
questions. She is like a caged beast, constantly seeking to escape
and kill her captors. I mean to turn her over to Rufus and Burne at
the keep today—she is more than we can hold and I fear to leave
her unguarded for even a moment. By writ of the Viscount, Rufus and
Burne are the lords of Hommlet and they have the authority to decide
her fate.”
The party stayed with Elmo while
the last of the bodies were removed from the river, and Danton told
the militia captain about the apparent murders of Jaroo and Yundi.
Hearing this, Elmo insisted that the party take him and his men to
the grove so that he could see what had happened with his own eyes.
By the time that Jaroo and Yundi’s
bodies had been unearthed and reburied yet again and the party had
answered all of Elmo’s questions, it was late afternoon.
Although Telemachos remained listless and anxious to leave town,
Danton and Luger insisted on a visit to the Temple of Pelor in the
center of town. Once there, the group found the chief cleric, Yether,
and his acolyte, Nerris, and told them of all that had transpired in
the moathouse, including the discovery of the great obelisk and other
strange objects the party had seen. They also revealed the presence
of cultist elements in Hommlet and the deaths of Jaroo, Yundi, and of
Karlun Fies and his family. In order to bolster their words, Danton,
Nanoc, and the others also showed the clerics the strange pendants
they had recovered from the cultists and some of the other weird
items they had found in the caverns under the moathouse.
While the young acolyte Nerris was
in a state of shock by the time Danton finished his tale, the older,
more experienced Yether seemed more saddened than anything else.
“Although I have only lived
in Hommlet for two years,” said Yether, “I felt from the
outset that this was a place where both the light and the dark are
strong. There are good people here and they have fought and defeated
great evil twice in the past, yet that evil is strongly rooted here
too. That vile temple is a blight on the entire region and, even
ruined, it draws evil men and creatures like moths to the flame.”
“Some wisdom
at last,” grunted Danton. “You Hommletians have got a
first-rate problem on your hands, no doubt about it, and if there is
a remote chance that my associates and I are to be part of the
solution, a substantial reward had better be offered … not to
mention reasonable compensation for our previous and current efforts.
After all, we hath already rooted out a substantial cultist cell
here in town, and smashed a second cultist force bent on plundering
the moathouse for dark ends. But we are through with pro bono work
for the local clergy, and have had enough of endangering our lives
for little profit or compensation. What little we hath gained thus
far hath largely been sold and re-cycled merely to obtain healing for
another foray.”
“Danton is
right,” said Aseneth approvingly. “There is much dark and
evil in world and we are all having own problems. My city is much
more bad than is Hommlet—has being totally ruined. If Hommlet
wanting us help, must helping us.”
“It’s
not that we like the cultists,” explained Nanoc. “We hate
‘em, but there’s just not a lot we can do about it if we
got no help. Things’re pretty okay fer me, but Tel an’
Danton an’ Asya gots their own problems an’ we gotta
think ‘bout that too, ya un’erstand?”
“All too
well,” replied Yether. “I am too old to join you, and
Nerris here is too young, but we will do what we can. Although I was
not born here, Hommlet is my home now. I can offer you assistance in
two ways: First, if you need my help to persuade others in town to
act, you shall have it. It is all too clear now that the darkness is
rising once again and we must act before it is too late. Second,
whenever you wish it, you may have shelter here at the temple, as
well as what healing and other support we can provide—without
charge—as long as you are fighting the dangers that threaten
the town.”
Danton scowled, but
Yether held up his hands placatingly. “I can offer no more!
This church is small and new—we simply have no money for a
reward! If a reward is to be given, I fear others must provide it,
for we cannot.”
“Shoot, we
ain’t talkin’ ‘bout gold!” protested Nanoc.
“Least I ain’t. Heck, I could waltz inta any old dungeon
and get gold. I want somethin’ better—this axe I took
from that cultist guy is pretty good—better made than my old
one, but it still ain’t magic. What I’m getting at is
this: Grundar says fight fire wit fire, so if’n you want me to
take out that there obelisk or something like that, I is gonna need a
magic axe or some magic armor or somethin’, not jus gold!”
Danton looked as if
he were about to protest as well, but Luger intervened.
“The valor
and commitment of the followers of Pelor is known to all. Your offer
is most gracious, and we know that we can count on you when the time
comes. Come now, Danton, we have other tasks to undertake.”
“Take these
scrolls with you,” said Yether, handing four sheets of
parchment to Luger. “May they serve you well.” (Luger
now has two new scrolls of cure light wounds, one of cure disease,
and one of neutralize poison.)
With Danton
muttering under his breath the entire way, the party made its way out
of the Temple of Pelor and to the nearby Church of St. Cuthbert,
where the group was able to obtain an audience with no less than
Canoness Y’dey herself when Danton and Nanoc withdrew the many
upside-down ‘Y’ and inverted ziggurat pendants the party
had recovered in both the moathouse and in Hommlet.
Y’dey and her
associates, Terjon, Calmer and Derim, sat with the party in a small
office-like room while Danton once again told the story of what the
party had learned in and under the moathouse and what had transpired
since the group returned to Hommlet.
“These
symbols are familiar to me,” said Y’dey, pointing at the
pendants Danton had laid out on the table in front of her, “as
are the four-sided statues you described seeing. While these are the holy symbols of the Elder Elemental Eye,” she said,
pointing at the inverted Y pendants, “these others are
the symbols of Tharizdun,” she said, pointing at the inverted
ziggurat pendants, “and this Geynor Ton’s mention of the
‘Dark God’ refers to Tharizdun as well. The four-sided
statues are depictions of Tharizdun’s followers.”
“What is
Tharizdun?” asked Luger. “I’ve never heard of such
a deity.” (knowledge—religion: 2+4=6)
“That does
not surprise me,” said Y’dey. “Few who yet live
know of He of Eternal Darkness. Tharizdun is a thing of an ancient
time, old and evil. He is the living embodiment of entropy—cold,
darkness, nothingness. He was imprisoned long ago when he sought to unmake existence itself, and for the sake of all life and the
very universe itself, we must hope that he remains forever so
imprisoned.”
“But what
does such a being have to do with the cultists of the Elemental Eye,
the Temple of Elemental Evil, and all that has happened in and around
Hommlet?” pressed Luger.
“I do not
know,” said Y’dey. “While we had always thought
that it was Zuggtmoy and Iuz who were behind the rise of the Temple,
perhaps the cult of the Elder Elemental Eye was secretly involved in
creating the Temple—certainly their efforts to excavate the
moathouse for lost relics of the Temple would suggest such is the
case. But finding acolytes of Tharizdun in league with the cult of
the Eye…I find that greatly disturbing, but I cannot fully
discern its import. You must leave me know—I have much to
ponder and decisions to make.”
“But, we hath
more to say…” protested Danton, frustrated at not even
having had a chance to make a pitch for compensation for the party’s
efforts.
“You heard
the Canoness,” said the gruff Terjon firmly, standing up from
the table and folding his arms in front of his chest. “We’re
done here.”
“We shall be
in touch,” said Calmer in a more friendly tone. “When we
have had time to think things through, someone will get in touch with
you at the inn.”
Thus effectively
shown the door, the party returned to the Welcome Wench for an
evening meal. Later, when the group retired to the common sleeping
area for the night, the party kept watches until morning, just as it
would have done in the wilderness. With the events of the last few
days, Hommlet now seemed a much darker place than it had before.
In the morning,
Nanoc and Telemachos, accompanied by Aseneth, went out to pick up
their refitted equipment—Nanoc’s shortbow and Telemachos’
plate mail. Next the trio paid a call on Spugnoir. While Aseneth
requested the potion maker’s assistance in identifying the
various cultist items she had determined to be magic, Nanoc inquired
as to what potions Spugnoir had available.
“I’d
specially like ta know if ya got anything ta boost strength, offer
curing, cure poison, or, if ya get turned into rock an’
paralyzed, somethin’ that will fix that. Ya got anything like
any o’ that? I still ‘member those stony rats from the
lair o’ those funny little birds an’ I didn’t like
that sight one bit.”
Spugnoir had only
one potion in stock meeting any of Nanoc’s descriptions, which
he sold to the barbarian at a hefty discount (potion of bull’s
strength sold for 150 gold). Spugnoir promised to get to work
producing additional potions and he was also able to identify many of
the magic items the party had recovered, particularly the potions.
Subsequently, when
the trio returned to the inn, Aseneth distributed the items Spugnoir
had identified, keeping what she described as “pure magic”
items for herself, including a ring, a brooch, a spellbook, a wand
and a scroll, while giving two healing potions and two feathers to
Telemachos, a bead of force and a healing potion to Danton, a healing
potion to Luger, and two healing potions and a potion of bull’s
strength to Nanoc.
Most of the items
required no explanation, but Aseneth did tell Telemachos the purpose
of the feathers:
“This will
making magic bird to take message to someone no matter how
far—anywhere in world. You could writing mother for sure since
knowing where she is. I am not knowing if would work for father—but
maybe bird can find person who is lost. It is magic, after all.”
Stunned at the
possibility of delivering a message unerringly to his mother or even
to his lost father, if he yet lived, Telemachos emerged from the
melancholy that had taken him when he learned that his great uncle
was indeed dead.
“Could he
send a message back to me?” he asked excitedly.
“Is not
working like that,” said Aseneth with a shake of her head.
“Message going one-way only—but if is working, you could
tell him where you are and what is happening with mother.”
“Wow,”
replied the soldier. “I’ll have to think really carefully
what to write and to whom since I’ve only got two feathers, but
this is…incredible. This could change everything.”
After lunch,
Aseneth announced that she and Nanoc would be gone for the afternoon.
After the pair departed, Telemachos began writing letter after letter
to each of his parents, only to shred each one and start over, while
Danton wrote idly in his journal and Luger rested and meditated on
all that had transpired since he left Greyhawk.
Meanwhile, Aseneth
led Nanoc up the hill south of the river until she found a shady spot
under a tree not far from the keep. The pair then sat and the woman
withdrew a book, paper, and writing implements and handed them to the
barbarian.
“Today,
Nanoc, you will start learning how is reading—you will needing
this one day if will being leader of men. We start learning with how
are letters.”
***
It was only the
next morning, after breakfast, when visitors finally came looking for
the party at the Welcome Wench. By this time Luger had healed all of
the party’s remaining injuries and everyone was anxious to get
underway again, whatever the destination might be. It was Elmo and
Calmer who found the party in the common room and asked the group to
join them for a private conversation outside. Once outside the inn,
the group
walked down to the riverbank behind the inn.
“We and the
Canoness have spoken with Rufus and Burne,” began Elmo when the
group was out of earshot of anyone else. “They agree the danger
is real and have decided on a course of action with the Canoness.
Supported by the Church of St. Cuthbert, Burne will send part of his
garrison to the moathouse to seal the place up—particularly
this obelisk chamber—against any further intrusions. At the
same time, my militia will post warnings about strange goings-on in
town and urge the townsfolk to report any unusual activities or
unknown persons seen in town or on the roads. In this manner, we can
secure the town and the moathouse.”
“At the same
time,” said Calmer, picking up the story, “we would like
you all to continue your investigations, wherever they may lead. For
now, we can offer you little more than safe haven and support in
Hommlet when needed, but you have the assurance of Rufus and Burne
that you will be richly rewarded—both by them and the Viscount
himself—if you are able to determine the true nature of this
threat and root it out. I know this is not the up-front reward you
might like, but if the town is truly in the danger we fear it is, we
will need all available resources to strengthen its defenses until
such time as the threat is eliminated. What say you to this
proposal?”
