“What
is that is that foul beast from the fires of hell?” hissed
Sparhawk as he looked at the hideously deformed woman standing atop
the floating altar.
“Look over
there!” yelled Tenaris, pointing off towards the western side
of the room, where a half-dozen flaming skeletons could be seen
charging out of the tunnel or alcove the party had spotted there
moments earlier when they entered what had to be the Fire Temple
alongside their Water Temple allies.
Without waiting
to see if anyone else would join her, Tenaris charged across the
chamber towards the skeletons. Regretting the group’s inability
to plan a more effective response, Danton followed the elf woman,
even as most of the kuo-toa warriors did the same.
After only a moment’s
reflection, Sparhawk too followed Danton and Tenaris, shouting as he
went:
“All you
spellcasters!” he called out, trying to address not only Luger
and Syll, but also the leaders of the Water Temple expeditionary
force. “Concentrate all your efforts against the temple! Do not
waste your firepower on that ugly wench! Distract her with a
couple of arrows, but throw your cold and water attacks against the
temple. It is our only hope of victory for the Water Temple!"
Whether
the spellbinders would comply, Sparhawk did not have the time or
opportunity to observe, for he, Danton, Tenaris, and five of the
kuo-toa were soon locked in melee with the half-dozen skeletons that
had emerged from the dark recess in the side of the massive cavern.
Tenaris, using her morningstar rather than her usual longsword, and
Sparhawk (+4 power attack: 13+5+2 charge bonus=20; hit; 14
damage—reduced by half=7 damage done) managed to strike the
skeletons facing them, but Justice was surprisingly
ineffective, slipping through the gaps between the skeleton’s
burning bones more than smashing them. Danton was so preoccupied by
concern for Tenaris, that his distracted efforts to strike one of the
skeletons were completely ineffective (attack: 1+9+2 charge=12,
2+4=6, both miss).
As the three party
members and the kuo-toa warriors succeeded in blocking the path of
the skeletons to Luger, Syll, and Nilbool, the leader of the Water
Temple force, the mindless undead resigned themselves to engaging the
various fighters and flailed at elf, human, and kuo-toa with their
burning limbs. But, at least for the moment, their attacks failed to
strike home.
Standing
behind both Syll and Nilbool, Luger called on Heironeous to establish
a veil of silence all around the Fire Temple altar, near where the
screaming, laughing woman he believed to be Tessimon stood (Cast
Silence). Moments later, when Syll blasted the woman with a
volley of magic missiles (10 damage done), Luger knew
his spell had worked when the woman’s screams were cut off and
the impact of the missiles on her body made no sound whatsoever. The
woman’s face contorted in rage as a spell she had apparently
been preparing was ruined by the missiles, the magical silence, or
both, but moments later she had bigger problems to worry about.
For, while Syll
attacked the woman directly and Luger did his best to block any
spellcasting she might attempt by silencing her, Nilbool made an
attack of a different sort. Withdrawing a scroll from a pouch, the
kuo-toa leader read aloud words of power that caused a ray of burning
greenish light to shoot forth from his hands and strike the black
altar next to the woman on the floating platform. There was a flash
of green and black light as the beam struck the altar, and then the
altar simply ceased to exist, with a variety of instantaneous
consequences.
As Luger and Syll
watched in shock, the flames in the pit in the center of the room
disappeared in the blink of an eye. A fraction of a second later, the
entire massive metal platform that had been suspended in the air
above the pit was falling, taking everything on it down with it,
including the woman with the claw for a hand. There was a terrific
crash as she, the platform, and everything else crashed into the pit,
the booming sound of which was now fully audible since the object on
which had Luger had cast his silence spell had been utterly
destroyed.
Although
he was still fighting the skeletons and unable to look over his
shoulder to see what had happened, when Sparhawk heard the crashing
sound, he yelled out, “The time of the Fire Temple is at an
end. The Water Temple will reign here from this moment forward."
The paladin continued to pound away at one of the skeletons with Justice, but was frustrated by how little damage his blade
seemed to do (+4 power attack: 12+5=17; hit; 19 damage—reduced
to 9).
When
the skeleton flailing at Danton finally managed to draw the scout’s
attention away from Tenaris and forced him to concentrate on what he
was doing, he managed to strike the thing twice with Rat’s
Tail (attack: 12+9=21, 20+4=24; one hit, one potential
critical hit—2nd roll: 3+4=7—ordinary hit
only; total of 12 damage—reduced to 6), he too discovered
just how ineffective blades were against the skeletons.
Even
as the claw-armed woman picked herself up from the rubble at the
bottom of the pit and scrambled up the side of it, with the evident
intent of fleeing to the south, away from the party and its Water
Temple allies, Syll and Luger peppered her in the back with spells.
The elf hit her with another barrage of magic missiles (10
damage done), while Luger blasted her with the divine light of
Heironeous (Cast Searing Light: 18+7=25; hit; 18 damage). The
magical assault staggered the woman, but she still managed to clear
the pit and rushed towards the metal doors at the far side of the
cavern.
Luger and Syll
probably would have had time for one more salvo of magical fire at
the fleeing woman had not the entire cavern begun to shake and rumble
at that very moment. The air in the chamber grew hot, and massive
stones began to fall from the ceiling and crash to the floor
throughout the chamber.
[Reflex saves:
Syll: 13+5=18: fail, Sparhawk: 12+5=17: fail, Danton:
19+8=27:success, Luger: 20+5=25:success]
Realizing
that the entire chamber was coming down, Luger and Syll turned to
run, but not before they both had the satisfaction of seeing the
fleeing priestess squashed flat by a gigantic boulder. Then, with
Nilbool running alongside them, the pair of spellcasters rushed back
to the north, through the open doors and out of the chamber. Luck or
divine intervention protected Luger from any harm as he ran, but Syll
took a hard hit on the right shoulder from a massive rock (hit for
9 damage) before he made it through the doors.
As
the spellcasters ran, so too did the combined force that had been
fighting the skeletons. “Run for your lives!” screamed
Danton when the first rocks began to fall. He feared that Tenaris and
Sparhawk might be crazy enough to keep on fighting. Much to his
relief, the elf woman turned and ran, with the paladin following a
moment later. The skeletons rushed forward to flail at their backs
and those of the kuo-toa as they fled, but they were too slow.
Danton’s cat-like reflexes enabled him to dodge the falling
rocks with relative ease as he ran, but the others were not so agile,
and both Tenaris and Sparhawk (hit for 12 damage) were struck
on the way out of the cavern. When a rock hit Tenaris on the back,
the blow staggered the woman, and Danton had to literally pull her
the rest of the way out of the room while she regained her bearings.
As the party and
the kuo-toa ran, the mindless skeletons pursued, making no effort to
avoid the falling stones. Two of the burning undead were obliterated
by the falling rocks, but the other four, despite taking hits, were
right on the heels of the party and the kuo-toa as they reached the
large tunnel beyond the metal doors.
The
skeletons were not the only threat outside the collapsing cavern, for
standing in the center of the tunnel and blocking the way farther
north was a male gnome wearing chainmail and a red skullcap. He had
dark, darting eyes and wore a massive inverted Y pendant with a red
diamond background. He carried a short sword and a huge steel shield
and clearly meant to block the party’s way forward. [gnome
initiative: 14]
Seeing
the gnome, Tenaris recovered her wits and rushed forward to attack
him, while Syll blasted the interloper with yet more magic
missiles (14 damage done). Following the mad dash of the
elf woman once again, Danton attacked the gnome as well (18+9+2
charge bonus=29, 7+4=11; one hit and one miss; 3 damage).
While
most of the party concentrated on clearing the path ahead, Luger
focused on the pursuing skeletons, calling on Heironeous to drive
them back into the cavern from whence they had come, where the rocks
that continued to fall would crush them like they had the others (Turn Undead: 2+0=2; failure). Unfortunately, Luger was not
fast or effective enough, and the skeletons were once again among the
party members and the kuo-toa before he could do anything about them.
Despite
the fact that he was being attacked by Tenaris, Syll, and Danton, the
chainmail-wearing gnome still managed to cast some sort of spell. No
one knew exactly what he had done until Luger suddenly froze in
mid-motion, still holding his holy symbol out in preparation for
another turning attempt (Luger will save: 7+12=19; failure).
With
the cleric out of the fight and his attempt to repel the skeletons
having failed, the party members and the kuo-toa were forced to deal
with the undead again. Tenaris took another hit from one of the
undead, which scorched her backpack and burned her left arm. Sparhawk
blocked one of the skeleton’s attacks with his shield, but
missed the undead when he tried to counter with Justice (+4
power attack: 9+5=14; miss). However, one of the four remaining
skeletons did finally go down when the water mephit that accompanied
the kuo-toa blasted it with some sort of energy attack.
The
kuo-toa did not spare the gnome who had stunned Luger either; Nilbool
hit the gnome with a bolt of lightning so powerful that it blasted
his skull cap clean off his head, making the wispy hair underneath
stand up straight. But despite the constant attacks of Tenaris and
Danton (attack: 5+9=14, 9+4=13; both miss) and yet another
flurry of Syll’s magic missiles (13 damage done),
not to mention the efforts of Nilbool, the gnome remained standing
and trying to cast more spells, but at least this time Syll’s
projectiles hit him in the arms in mid incantation, wrecking whatever
spell he had been about to launch at the party.
With the rest of
the party either dealing with the gnome or out of the fight, it was
left to Sparhawk and the kuo-toa warriors to deal with the three
remaining burning skeletons.
"Fight on,
fish-men!” urged the paladin when he saw one of the kuo-toa go
down in flames after being struck by one of the skeletons. “Let
us obtain a well-deserved victory for the forces of the Water Temple
and its newfound allies. Your mistress was correct in her
knowledge of attacking the temple. That is indeed the vulnerability
that causes the entire temple and its forces to be defeated!”
As
if to punctuate his words, the paladin struck one of the skeletons an
incredible blow that should have smashed it to bits, but somehow did
not (+4 power attack: 19+5=24; potential critical hit—2nd roll: 16+5=21; critical hit; 30 damage—reduced to 15).
However, standing next to Sparhawk, the kuo-toa warrior known as
Urlurg, the only one of the fish-men who fought bare-handed, punched
his fist into the center of mass of one of the other skeletons,
causing the entire skeleton to smash to bits in an explosion of bone
and powder.
But just when the
party and its kuo-toa allies seemed to once again be whittling down
the ranks of the opposition, still more Fire Temple reinforcements
arrived. Charging out of the tunnel off to the southeast were two
more foes that rushed to aid the two remaining skeletons and the
gnome in cutting off any retreat by those who had destroyed the Fire
Temple’s altar.
One
of the two newcomers was a human male who wore dark green plate armor
with a scaly pattern that gave the armor a reptilian appearance. He
wielded a short sword in each hand, and one of the two blades emitted
flames as he rushed to aid the gnome [human warrior initiative:
8].
The
second new arrival was another of the massive salamander-humanoids
like those the party and the Water Temple strike force had fought on
their way into the Fire Temple, but this one was much larger and it
wore bright red plate armor that had clearly been specially crafted
to fit the salamander’s unusual body shape. The armor was
covered in flaming skull imagery, and the salamander wielded a
massive, barbed, two-handed sword. A palpable wave of malevolence
accompanied the creature as it slithered rapidly forward to engage
the party and the kuo-toa [salamander initiative: 21].
“Man!”
screamed Syll. “We’ve got to get out of here! These fire
guys just keep coming out of the woodwork, and I still haven’t
managed to learn Tenser’s Instant Firehose! We gotta
punch through and get out while we still can!”
No
one disagreed with the elf, but as long as the ways both ahead and
back were blocked, the party and the kuo-toa had little choice but to
fight. Tenaris, Syll and Danton continued to pound away at the gnome.
After still another magical salvo from Syll (10 damage done),
the gnome finally staggered and his defenses wavered enough for
Danton to run him through with Rat’s Tail (attack:
18+9=27, 16+4=20; one hit for 7 damage).
Leaving it to the
kuo-toa to deal with the two remaining skeletons and the onrushing
salamander, Sparhawk moved to face the human fighter in the green
platemail as he approached Danton and Tenaris.
“Have
at thee, fiend!” he hissed as he smashed Justice into
the man’s side in the hope of drawing his attention away from
the others (+4 power attack: 14+5=19; hit; 11 damage).
Even as Sparhawk made
his attack, he could not help but notice out of the corner of his eye
that the salamander made short work of another of the kuo-toa
warriors with his massive barbed blade.
Although Danton and
Tenaris had been too busy with the gnome to notice it, Nilbool, who
had been near them throughout the latest engagement, had been reading
another scroll for some time. When he finally finished his
incantation, he pointed his finger at Urlurg, the water mephit and
the two other remaining kuo-toa warriors, and all of them, including
Nilbool, suddenly disappeared in a flash of brilliant blue light and
a crack of thunder that echoed off the cavern walls.
Whereas the party
and the Water Temple forces had been holding their own reasonably
well against the constant stream of Fire Temple reinforcements, with
all of the kuo-toa gone in an instant, the party was left alone to
face everything the Fire Temple had left to throw into the fray.
“The betrayal
of the water forces hath come!” yelled Danton. “They hath
left us in the lurch! Now is truly the time to get the hell out of
dodge!”
As
bad as things looked, there was one bright spot: the death of the
gnome had apparently freed Luger from his paralysis. Having been able
to observe most of what had transpired while he was helplessly frozen
in place, Luger was prepared to act. The moment he felt his muscle
control restored, he detonated the most powerful smite he could
deliver right at his feet, engulfing the entire party and all of its
attackers (Holy Smite: 28 area effect damage—DC 18 to save
for half).
As
the wave of brilliant light washed over all of the combatants, the
two remaining skeletons were simply consumed and burned to ash. The
human warrior and the salamander were burned as well, but both were
made of sterner stuff than the skeletons and they survived and kept
fighting. None of the party members, save for Danton (reflex save:
14+8-2 penalty due to presence of salamander=20; success), who
instinctively leaped and rolled out of the way when he saw the wave
of light approaching, made any effort to avoid the light, and it
washed over all of the others without any effect.
Luger’s
sudden return to the fight and his devastating attack drew the
attention of the salamander, which ran its massive blade right
through the cleric’s chainmail (hit for 14 points). It
also swiped at Luger with its massive tail, but the cleric managed to
block that with his shield, even though the impact was so powerful
that it made his shield arm go numb. Syll peppered the salamander
with magic missiles (11 damage done), but it ignored
the elf and bore down on Luger.
“Time to die,
cleric!” hissed the reptilian creature. “I’ll kill
you and your little paladin friend for what you’ve done!”
In
other circumstances, Danton might have gone to Luger’s aid, but
when he saw that the human warrior had ignored Sparhawk’s
challenge and made straight for Tenaris, all thoughts for anything
other than the elf woman’s safety flew from Danton’s
head. He too struck the man (attack: 16+9=25, 7+4=11; one hit, 6
damage), but was no more successful than Sparhawk (attack: +4
power attack: 17+5=22; hit; 14 damage) in drawing the green-clad
warrior away from Tenaris. The warrior struck the elf woman with both
his mundane and his flaming short swords, setting her clothing afire
with the latter weapon. So single-minded was the man that he ignored
both Tenaris’ own blade, which struck him in the chest, and
another hit from Danton (attack: 5+9=14, 19+4=23, one hit, 7
damage) in favor of his onslaught against the woman. The man hit
Tenaris with his burning blade a second time, and this time she went
down in flames.
“Tenaris!
No!” screamed Danton in blind pain and rage as he saw the elf
woman fall to the floor of the tunnel.
“You
ignore a paladin of Heironeous at your peril!” bellowed
Sparhawk as he finally made the armored man pay for his obsession
with Tenaris (+4 power attack: 16+5=21; hit; 20 damage). Justice crashed down on the man’s green helmet, smashing
it into the warrior’s skull and killing him instantly.
Closer
to the entrance to the Fire Temple, where rocks still fell from the
ceiling, Luger desperately fired off a blast of holy light at the
salamander as it bore down on him (Cast Searing Light: 16+7=23;
hit; 14 damage). The white light burned the salamander and Syll,
his magic missiles exhausted, withdrew a scroll and fired an
acid arrow at the monster as well (Cast Melf’s Acid Arrow: 2
damage).
But
none of this even slowed the salamander down, and, moving with
lightning speed, it slashed Luger twice with its massive blade (hit
for 27 damage), and then smashed him back against the wall of the
cavern with its tail (hit for 11 damage).
With
his consciousness fading from such a beating, Luger desperately
converted one of his most powerful spells to healing (Convert
Control Water to Cure Critical Wounds: +27 HP), calling on
Heironeous to stave off death for at least a little longer. Syll’s
acid arrow still burned the salamander (7 damage), but,
completely focused on Luger, it ignored this, and another attack by
the elf (Cast Ray of Frost: 5+5=10; hit; 2 damage).
Literally
pinning Luger against the wall with its sword (hit for 14 damage),
the salamander roared at its impending victory even as Geistblatt slipped from Luger’s limp grasp as he writhed against the
cavern wall on the end of the salamander’s blade. The tail
circled around to finish the cleric, who knew that his end was at
hand. But then something the cleric would never have expected
happened.
When
Danton saw Tenaris go down in fire and blood, the scout was certain
she was dead. But somehow rather than collapse in despair at the side
of her burned body, a raw animal rage like nothing he had ever
experienced before swept over him. When he saw the massive reptilian
creature across the cavern, his wrath at Tenaris’ death carried
him across the room. He did not know that the creature had Luger
pinned to the wall and he did not care. He only wanted to share his
pain and kill anything that stood against him. When he plunged Rat’s
Tail into the creature’s back all the way up to the hilt,
it was the mightiest blow the Velunese had ever struck (attack:
15+9+2=26; hit; 19 damage).
The salamander,
just about to finish Luger with its tail and barbed sword, quivered
as Danton’s blade sliced through its most vital organs. The
massive greatsword slipped from the salamander’s grasp, its
tail shook, and then the entire massive coiled body collapsed to the
dirt and stone of the tunnel floor with a resounding thud.
While Syll helped
Luger to free himself from the tunnel wall and Danton collapsed to
the ground unmoving and lying on his back, Sparhawk surveyed the
battlefield for signs of any more Fire Temple attackers. At least for
the moment, there were none.
When
the paladin came to the spot where Tenaris had fallen, he saw what
Danton had missed in the chaos of the battle—the faint, uneven
movement of the woman’s chest under her armor as she drew
breath. Calling for Syll to bring Luger at once, the paladin stood
guard over the badly burned woman while Luger again converted one of
his most powerful spells to healing (Convert Control Water to Cure
Critical Wounds: +32 HP).
Throughout all of
this, Danton lay on the ground in a state of shock, and it was only
when he heard Tenaris’ voice, asking lightly what had happened,
that he returned to his senses enough to sit up and see that Sparhawk
was helping the elf warrior to her feet, her terrible burns
miraculously healed.
While
all of this was happening, Syll borrowed Sparhawk’s backpack,
cast Detect Magic and began collecting items from the fallen
that resonated magic.
“Now, I don’t
want anybody to get all upset over this,” said the elf. “I’m
just gathering up these valuables for future identification and
distribution. We’ll divide things later, and Sparhawk can carry
them in the meantime.”
From what Syll was
able to determine, the two fallen kuo-toa fighters each carried two
potions, the gnome cleric had an enchanted short sword, metal shield,
and suit of chainmail, as well as a pair of bracers, while the
salamander had carried only a magic ring and two strange vials of
non-magical liquid in addition to his massive enchanted barbed
greatsword. The gnome had carried three more bottles of some other
strange non-magical liquid. The human fighter who had nearly killed
Tenaris had carried the magical flaming short sword. But perhaps most
interesting of all, Syll discovered that both the human fighter and
the gnome cleric had each carried a long, diamond shaped metal bar
that resonated magic. These metal bars were roughly the same size as
the two triangular metal bars the party had taken from the leaders of
the Earth Temple.
When Syll handed
the two diamond-shaped bars to Luger, and the cleric held them
together, they combined into a single larger diamond-shaped bar, just
as the two triangular bars from the Earth Temple had done.
Although Tenaris
seemed totally unfazed by her near-death experience, Danton found
himself greatly shaken by having his emotions wrenched in so many
different directions in such a short time. As Syll finished gathering
up the items and returned Sparhawk’s pack to the paladin and
everyone was on their feet again, Danton tried to pull himself
together by focusing on the perilous situation at hand.
“Luck
hath shined on us,” he said, looking at Tenaris and shaking his
head in a combination of disbelief and relief. “In spite of
their sudden departure, we wert right to gamble on the alliance with
the Water Temple, for it hath finally provided us with some
much-needed answers and focus. Unless Kelashein hath cagily lied to
us -- admittedly, a real possibility -- she hath foolishly revealed
much. First, the key to the elemental temples is their altars, which,
when destroyed, sap them either in the long-term or permanently.
Second, we now know where two altars are -- the Earth Temple's
ziggurat and the Fire Temple's floating altar – and we hath
destroyed both. Third, methinks we also know where the Water Temple's
altar is -- I am willing to bet it is that bizarre suspended platform
in the water-filled cavern from which we exited onto Mt. Stalagos'
inner lake. Fourth, we hath learned that the Air Temple lieth off to
the south and that 'tis the third weakest temple. Fifth, we hath
learned a bit about the Doomdreamers' politics and the mode of
accession to that mysterious but doubtlessly foul group.”
“Those
Doomdreamers will come after us now that we’ve hit two of the
temples,” said Luger. “I just know it.”
“That’s
all very interesting,” said Syll, “but we better be
figuring where we’re going next and get moving. We hopefully
dusted a lot of Fire Temple bigwigs here, but if there are any left,
they’ll probably be here shortly and I got a feeling they’ll
be in a rotten mood…”
”True,
true,” admitted Danton, “but all that we hath learned
from Kelashein offers a valuable
insight, for, if nothing else, it at least gives us a yardstick
against which to measure our progress: the destruction of the
elemental temples' altars. That, in short, means that we do not need
to annihilate each and every minion of darkness in this place -- a
dubious prospect if e'er I hath saw one. Instead, we need conduct
surgical strikes on altars.”
Looking
again at Tenaris, he added, “I
am more pleased by the recent turn of events than I might have
guessed. I now hath hope that we can do more than wander around and
slay people, which giveth me hope that our quest -- which never
seemed more than a foolish man's dream -- just might be
feasible. This knowledge, combined with the miraculous nature of our
victory here today, leadeth me to believe that ultimate victory may
truly be possible.”
“Yup,”
agreed Syll. “The deal with the Water Temple really was a good
idea, at least for the short term. But here’s a disturbing
thought to spoil the moment: Does the destruction of one
temple strengthen the other temples in any way other than simple
survival of the fittest? What I mean is, is there some well of power
that all four tap into, and the destruction of one leaves the other
three with more power to tap into? We need to be careful that in
destroying the altars we don’t strengthen the final temple to
the point where we can’t destroy it.”
“Since those
fish-boys left us in the lurch, we don’t know if they would
have betrayed us on the way back across the lake,” continued
Syll. “But my money says Kelashein will mark us as a major
threat now. She gambled on using us to help her thugs take down the
Fire Temple and it worked—but now she’s the big dog in
this place and she’s not gonna take any chances. I also bet
she’ll have her own temple guarded big-time now, if it wasn’t
already. Wherever we go next, we better be ready for trouble from her
the next time we run into her or her lackeys.”
“But in the
mean time,” said Syll, with a glimmer in his eye and a sudden
change in his tone of voice, “since a little bird told me that
you’re into elven poetry, ‘Delchin’, here’s a
little for you now in honor of our alliance with the Water Temple,
while it lasted:
Water! Water! Go!
Go! Go!
Water, water let it
flow!
We’ll blast
them ‘till they ain’t no mo’
Then pack it up and
off we go!
Agua, Agua it’s
the best
So much better than
all the rest!
It smashes earth,
it trashes air,
Puts out fires
everywhere!
If fire temple
don’t act fast
It won’t be
nothing but fire and ash!
‘Cause water
temple’s got the stuff
Other temples ain’t
nothin’ but fluff!
Booyeah, booyeah,
we’re too cool
Water Temple
Minions Rule!”
While
Danton and Luger stood and looked at Syll in shock, Tenaris and
Sparhawk both burst out laughing.
